Why Rome?

Rome, the city of seven hills

The original city of Romulus was built upon Palatine Hill (Latin: Mons Palatinus). The other hills are the Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian, and Aventine (known respectively in Latin as the Mons Capitolinus, Mons Quirinalis, Mons Viminalis, Mons Esquilinus, Mons Caelius, and Mons Aventinus).

In modern Rome, five of the seven hills—the Aventine, Caelian, Esquiline, Quirinal, and Viminal Hills—are now the sites of monuments, buildings, and parks. The Capitoline Hill is the location of Rome's city hall, and the Palatine Hill is part of the main archaeological area. The Gianicolo is the second highest hill in Rome (about 90m/295ft) after nearby Monte Mario. This made it an ideal defensive point for all of the occupants of the Eternal City, dating back to the first settlers in this area, including the Phoenicians, Veii and Etruscans.
